Chapter 10
I donât realize thereâs anyone in the teachersâ lounge until Iâm already inside. Madam Zee and the rest of her team sit in a circle in the middle of the floor. All of the tables and chairs, as well as our gear, have been pushed to the side.
Glowing white candles form a circle around the participants. Zee sits cross-legged with her palms up and her eyes closed. One of her groupies by the door shushes me but doesnât kick me out. This is exactly what I need right now.
With a sigh, I lean against the wall and across my arms over my chest. This is just great. Iâm so glad I walked in on the fake psychic trying to con people out of their hard-earned money.
The flickering candlelight is kind of soothing, though, and thereâs a low chanting sound accompanied by flutes coming from a small boombox on the other side of the room. Not the worst place to go after being betrayed by your best friend, even though Zee is sitting right there.
Bear lifts his lip to growl, and I scratch behind his ears to quiet him. Zee doesnât seem to notice me, so maybe some good will come of this if I can get some footage of her cold reading people.
âLetâs count back from ten, and as we do, try to envision lifting the veil between this plain and the other. As that veil rises, we invite spirits from the other side to meet with us, to communicate with us, and to entrust us with their messages.â Her hands lift from their palm -open position to hover in front of her over a large, glassy-looking ball.
No way. She seriously does not have a crystal ball. I rack my brain to try to remember if she had one during any of our sessions, but I donât remember one. Tarot cards, yes, and a Ouija board, once before I knew better, but no crystal ball. I might have clued in on the fact that she was a fraud sooner if she had whipped out a crystal ball.
She waves her hands over the ball, and the flickering candlelight almost makes it glow. Sheâs good. I have to give her that.
One of her groupies turns the music down so itâs just a faint background thrumming, in time with my heartbeat. No doubt itâs on purpose.
Iâm too far away to hear what Zee is mumbling, but Iâm pretty sure if I get much closer sheâll realize Iâm there and kick me out, so I keep my mouth shut and stay put against the wall.
Soon enough, a couple of the people in the circle gasp and stare at her. She rocks back in her spot on the floor and sits up straighter.
âWe are not alone.â Her voice is low, almost a raspy growl. âThe spirits, they are all around us.â She lifts one shaky hand and points at each person in the circle, her long fingernails so dark they look like theyâre dipped in blood.
